Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Rwenzori Mountains National Park known as Mountains of Moon situated between the border of Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. With area of 996square km Rwenzori Mountains originated from uplift associated with formation of western rift valley (Albertine). The range runs about 220km with highest point Margherita Peak 5109m on Mount Stanley.
Rwenzori provide unparalleled opportunity to explore mountain wilderness covered with Giant heathers and lobelia which tower over rwenzori area found 415km away from Kampala city. Two main trekking routes follow the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers on the eastern side of mountains. These can be combined to create a challenging circular trek through the heart of ranges.
Wild animals found in Rwenzori include tree hyraxes, blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkey, black fronted duikers and red duikers endemic to Rwenzori. Bird species include regal and purple breasted sunbird, francolin, olive pigeon and rwenzori turaco.
